Washington DC Demonstration Planned for October 25
There will be a peaceful demonstration in protest of Egypt's treatment of human rights activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim in Washington, DC. The demonstrators are asking the Egyptian government to nullify the verdicts of Ibrahim and the other Ibn Khaldun defendants, give them immediate release, and provide Ibrahim with access to adequate medical care. The demonstration will take place at 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Friday, October 25, 2002, at the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau, 1303 New Hampshire Ave., NW, located near the Dupont Circle metro stop, in Washington, DC.
The demonstration is being sponsored jointly by Amnesty International USA, and the group Center St. & Vine, comprised largely of former students and faculty who knew Ibrahim in the 60's and 70's when he taught at DePauw University. Given the fragile nature of Ibrahim's health, many now feel an urgency to protest in a more visible way. The organizers note that peaceful protest is a benefit of the democratic society that Dr. Ibrahim has promoted. Folks wishing more information about the demonstration may contact Amnesty International's Mid-Atlantic Regional Office in Washington.
